CRIME
is a serious problem. It affects individuals, families, communities, and society.
You can make a difference. Through crime prevention efforts, you and others
can give each other greater control, strengthen bonds, and help the police
keep you and your family, home, and property safe.
PROTECT YOURSELF AT
ALL TIMES
- Be alert when returning
to your home. Have your key ready as you approach the door. If you think
someone is inside, DO NOT GO IN! Call the police
from a nearby telephone.
- On the telephone DO
NOT give information to strangers. Hang up on obscene or prank callers.
Report these calls to the police department.
- When answering the
door, talk through a closed door. Install a peephole, don't depend on a
door chain to keep you safe. Never let a stranger in. Ask service people
for identification.
- Go with a friend if
your walking, biking, or jogging. Avoid isolated areas. Stay alert and look
confident. DO NOT wear headphones, carry a
lot of cash, or wear expensive clothing or jewelry.
- Never carry your purse
by the strap, loosely over your shoulder, or leave your purse unattended.
Hold your purse firmly and cover the clasp with your hand.
- REPORT STOLEN CREDIT
CARDS IMMEDIATELY
SECURE YOUR HOME
- Make doors crime resistant.

- Keep windows locked.
- Consider grates for
basement windows.
- Secure sliding doors.

- Keep your yard, porch
ans entry ways well lit.
- Keep bushes trimmed
below window level and away from doors.
- Put two or more inside
lights on timers when you are away.
- Rent a safe deposit
box for small valuables.
- Engrave appliances,
electronic equipment, and other household valuables with an identifiable
number. A tool for engraving is available at the Police Station.
