The training at the Peabody Police Department has been developed and is delivered by qualified professionals. It is our objective to produce highly trained qualified law enforcement officers to better serve and protect the members of our community.

The Training Division's primary goal is to manage :

  • The research, development, and administration of training at the Peabody Police Department, including recruit training, reserve officer training, and dispatcher training.
  • The continuing education of all sworn officers
  • The utilization of specialized schools and outside agencies for officer training
  • The compliance of training with Massachusetts general laws, and the departments rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • The preparation of the departments long range training and educational requirements

In conjunction with our goals, we keep all of our officers certified in basic life support, and also trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first responder.

The department has an elaborate, six bay, electronic firing range for officer firearm training. Every month, an officer has the opportunity to practice with their weapons in our range. Twice a year, a more formal firearm training of all officers is accomplished. All officers must pass the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council firearm course. We provide many other techniques in combat firing so that our officers remain at the peak of their abilities at all times. All officers are also advised of the rules & regulations of weapon useage, and all applicable laws.

The Research and Development Division helps develop improved procedures based on continual monitoring of the success of existing programs, and analyzes important current crime statistics for presentation to the department. Currently R & D is performing the upgrading of "body armor" (bullet proof vests) and the upgrade of current officer issued firearms.

It is essential to keep up with rapid advances in law enforcement technology, to assist in crime fighting and in the manner we provide services to the public. We now utilize computer oriented programs and digital photography to aid in the capture of criminals.
